How should I charge filemaker client

Setting prices is really hard. I will tell you this: if you're capable of doing a good job, people are willing to pay much more than you'd probably expect.

If you have 20 years experience programming, but no experience in project management, gathering requirements, or client relations, then you're not that experienced. If you are not so experienced at freelancing — a separate skillset from just development — but you're a very skilled developer, I think $50-$75/hr, depending on your scruples, is entirely fair. If you do that, and they're happy, then for the next client, raise your prices.

If you have 20 years of all of the above and are confident (through hard-won experience) that you can deliver a top quality project and keep a client satisfied in all ways, I think charging between $100-$140 and hour is entirely reasonable, depending on the size of the client... corporations should pay more than schools or 2-person nonprofits, in my personal opinion.

Another thing to think about is: how much money do you still need to cover your expenses this month? If you don't know how you're going to make rent, price yourself with an eye towards making SURE you get the job. If you can afford to lose the job and still make expenses, aim higher.

Note: I live in a very expensive city. I do take remote jobs from other areas, so I think my sense of pricing might be broadly applicable, but living in a notable tech center might give me some cachet that makes it easier to charge more, I dunno. You have to feel it out.

Also, all of the above is strictly opinion, based solely on gut instinct, plus a smidgen of my own experience. Take it as that.

It’s not how much you will charge an hour. Ask yourself, what is the value of the software you will deliver to your potential client? If it saves cost or increases his revenue by 30k a year, you’ll understand how much to price your project.
